Coconut oil is delicious as a substitute for butter and smells yummy. Here are some of its less-known benefits:

1. Skin Care: Coconut oil is very good as a moisturizer for all skin types. It is especially useful for dry skin and aging skin. Coconut oil can also help with skin problems like psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin conditions.

2. Make up remover: Put a bit of coconut oil on a piece of cotton and wipe your face clean.

3. Shaving cream: use coconut oil instead of your shaving cream for silky smooth legs.

4. Teeth and gums:
Take 1 teaspoon, once in the am and once before bed. Swish around your mouth for as long as you can: 5 – 20 mins. Then spit it out and brush. It removes plaque and whitens your teeth and also gets rid of the different types of plaque that cause Halitosis and heart problems.

5. Hair Care: Massage a bit of the oil onto your scalp to get rid of  dandruff.  Since it provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair, it helps to apply the oil on the hair before washing it. It also makes a wonderful natural hair gel.

6. Deodorant: Reapply every 12 hours and you’re good to go.

7. Sunscreen: First of all, Safe Mama wrote a great list of natural sunscreens. Secondly, a lot of people use coconut oil as a natural sunscreen successfully. I haven’t tried yet, but am planning on it. I have used it as an after-sun lotion on my oldest kid and it helped better than an aloe gel.

8. Colds: Scientific studies have shown coconut oil to have antimicrobial, antiviral, antiparasitic and antioxidant properties. At the first sign of a sore throat, sinus congestion and fatigue take 2 to 3 tablespoons of coconut oil mixed in a glass of lukewarm orange juice with every meal.

9. Vomiting: Because coconut is readily absorbed into the body throught the skin, the oil can be massaged into the skin of a vomiting person: one tablespoon at a time, two or three times a day.

10. Anti-Bacterial and anti-fungal: The saturated fats in coconut oil have anti-bacterial properties and help control fungi and parasites.

11. Digestion: The fat in coconut oil helps to absorb vitamins, minerals and amino acids, improving your digestion.

12. Weight Loss: Coconut oil has been proven to stimulate metabolism, improve thyroid function, and improve energy levels. You need all of it to lose weight.

13. Healing: When applied on scrapes and cuts, coconut oil forms a thin protectivel layer (similar to Neosporin,) which protects the wound from outside dust, bacteria and viruses. Coconut oil speeds up the healing process of bruises by repairing damaged tissues.

14. Pets: Rubbed some through your pet’s fur and the dandruff is likely to go  away.

15. Atopic Dermatitis and Mosquito bites:

I found this recipe:

1 cup coconut oil
I teaspoon Vitamin E oil,
1 teaspoon Tea Tree oil
20 drops of Lavender Essential oil

Mix well and apply as often as needed.

The inflammation disappeared within a couple of hours and by the next morning you could visibly see her skin starting to heal. We keep it in the refrigerator and have been using it for 2 weeks. Her skin looks great and she feels wonderful. We can’t wait for her parents to get here and see her skin they were both practically in tears (this has been the worst year yet).

Additionally, according to The Coconut Oil Miracle by Bruce Fife, coconut oil can be used to prevent heart disease,  high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes, atherosclerosis,  stroke and chronic inflammation.
